The Browse No. 6: Some Things Never Change (And That's OK)
Starting 2024 with micro-shorts, bedtime mocktails and no big life changes!
At some point during the first few hours of 2024, I felt thankful for things that have stayed the same. I started this year not too differently than the year prior; with shameless karaoke, a small group of friends, a shimmery outfit and lot of journaling at coffee shops.
Around this time we’re usually focusing on what we should change, what we can make different or how we can make a meaningful turn in a new direction. But there’s joy to be had in what stays the same. Because it’s usually when we stop to relish in that joy that the biggest changes occur.
I’m probably echoing a similar theme from last January: patience. And while I tend to worry about being redundant or repeating myself with my work, I’m realzing that’s something I need to be OK with as well. Embracing the same. Repeating what works. There’s nothing shameful about it!
From a personal style perspective, I started Mandy Lee’s 75 Hard Style Challenge a couple of days ago. It came to me at an interesting time — when I don’t feel exactly satisfied or unsatisfied with my wardrobe, but rather, want to reacquaint myself with it.
So with this, I want to focus on what I have, repeat outfit formulas and be okay with my personal style feeling, well, the same!
I’m going to be 29 this year, so I feel like it’s a good time to narrow down my “forever pieces” — or at the very least, my forever style elements! Because I know those will be the ones that anchor my style and allow for more creative flexibility in the future.
Some things I know for sure (for now): I’ll always want to keep embracing skirts. I’ll never stop loving my long, black coat. And I’ll (probably) always mix silver and gold jewelry.
And if I do this challenge right, I won’t bring anything new into my closet for the next 75 days. A thought that sounds daunting and a little bit impossible, but it makes me excited. Because I’m hoping to gain something much more substantial: greater sense of ease, comfort and inner exploration within my wardrobe.
Holding my desire for experimentation and contentness is going to be the biggest hurdle, I think. Because above all, my personal style is a form of play and communication for me. But I know that middleground exists, somewhere!
🔍 MY BROWSING HISTORY:
Casual ballgowns
Whilst going down a NYE outfit planning rabbit hole, I came across Isaac Mizrahi’s 1994 collection that left me in awe and inspired.
