Love Letter #005: Uniformity
Deep purples, NYFW favorites, autumn ballads and more things I loved in September.
Hello! I’ve gotten some new subscribers in the last week, so I wanted to say, thank you for signing up to be a part of my little corner of the internet. This is my monthly check-in where I reflect and share some love notes to things I’ve read, observed or felt.
Consistency and uniformity were on my mind this month. I want to feel self-disciplined, steady, studious. The concept of uniforms fits into this perfectly; they rely on repetition and predictability but can also invite a certain amount of discordance; an untucked shirt there, a wrinkled cardigan there. Uniforms can also be a very much needed antidote to decision paralysis — something I’m trying to cure myself these days when getting dressed.
And maybe uniforms are on my mind because this is the time of year that feels like I’m supposed to be buying school supplies and re-watching Dead Poet’s Society. It could be the temperature change too; there’s a desire after the hot, overstimulating summer to want consistency and ease. A blank slate. No need to change clothes as often — you’re not sweating through them!
Or maybe I’m craving to establish uniformity throughout my life in such a perfect way that it makes it that much more fun to break against it when the time comes.
P.S.: I have more coming in the months ahead — including more essays, interviews and some content you can listen to. 🎙️
💌 A LOVE LETTER TO…
1. For your autumn playlist consideration: echoey acoustics, heart-wrenching lyrics and voices that haunt you during a rainy night. For me, that’s been Leonard Cohen’s Various Positions but also Maple Gilder’s 2021 album, To Enjoy Is The Only Thing.
2. The Spring 2023 fashion’s designer collections that have me utterly bewitched, inspired and most importantly — surprised; Mystifying lived-in sweaters and ghostly nightgowns by Prada; Sleeves reminiscent of sea anemone by Proenza Schouler; A fun, feminine (and transparent) approach to layering by Tory Burch.
3. Silks for fall? Well, yes! As long you’re layering it well, silk remains to be one of my favorite things to pair knitwear with — creating an unlikely but endlessly chic couple. Some pieces catching my eye: this vintage silk halter top from Shop Clash or this creamy Nanushka silk midi skirt.
4. My love for purple evolves and changes with my mood, my age and of course — the seasons. It’s October and I’m in love with deep plum shades especially in paint colors or nail polish.
5. As for shoes, I have Mary Jane on the mind. Specifically, I find myself searching for a pair in red — that I can pair perfectly or imperfectly with a pair of red tights/socks — but also everyday black ones such as these.
6. Speaking of shoes — I’ve gotten serious about purchasing socks as of late. They are an essential practical and decorative accessory and I’m tired of picking them up haphazardly (and usually, last minute). I recently bought some nicer quality ones in blue and leopard print (a neutral, you know) from COS. For some extra fun, I found this green sheer pair, too.
7. If there’s one thing we’re all obsessed with these days is embellishments; charms, ribbons, pendants, tiny trinkets and hairclips. Something to decorate ourselves with! The shop, Haricot Vert personifies this vibe perfectly. She has everything from earrings dripping with colorful beads to bedazzled vintage purses.
